Are you going to love it? Or are you going to list it? For anyone who watches HGTV, you know that prompting line of questioning. If only purchasing a new home was as simple, easy, and fun as watching the famous cheeky banter of Hilary and David. But wait… maybe it can be?

Having recently moved to Northern Virginia, it was only about a month or two ago when my husband and I agreed we were ready to move out of our temporary rental and throw down some permanent roots. But we were at odds with each other over what kind of place was right for us. I said I wasn’t the townhouse type, and he said I’d never convince him to buy a single-family. So, with checklists in hand, we both set out to prove each other wrong in a fun little reality-inspired game to find the perfect place that fulfilled the other’s homesteading demands.

OK, let me just fast forward a minute to the outcome of this competition. I’ll admit it, my husband won. We closed on a beautiful, mid-century modern townhouse in Reston. This is the part of the show where you see us clinking glasses together in a local establishment and boasting to the camera how happy we are in our new home, how we couldn’t have made a better decision, and how we found everything we were looking for in Reston. Well, that isn’t too far off from the truth.

Kelly Krolikowski, Real Estate Agent extraordinaire with RE/MAX Executives. What else can I say, patient, attentive, witty and sharp. I met her at a house in Burke. I was completely convinced Burke was where we needed to be—dragging Kelly from place to place, babbling about what I thought were good insights on our future real estate investment. Kelly always listened and nodded her head, providing constructive and positive feedback, and a realistic perspective on the potential each home had to offer. Then she finally spoke reason to me. “I hear what you’re saying, but I see you outgrowing this place. I really think you should look in Reston. I see you in Reston.”

Upon Kelly’s recommendation, my husband and I took our dog out to Reston, where we spent the evening walking around Lake Anne, and where we coincidentally came across a “For Sale” sign in front of a townhouse. We agreed—she was right. We stopped at the wine bar, clinked our glasses together and texted Kelly, “Of course we want to be here! We’ll take it. Seriously, we would love to put an offer in.”

For me, Kelly didn’t just unlock doors and let me look around random buildings. She saw us, and our bigger picture that went beyond four walls and a ceiling. She guided us to our forever home with big windows, lots of light and an attached lifestyle. Behind the scenes, she calculated, negotiated, and provided a level of professional service that concluded our competition with reassurance and gratitude. I can’t recommend her enough, as she will go above and beyond. Thank you, Kelly, for all your help and hard work.

My husband and I started looking for a home during the craziest time to buy, with most people waiving home inspections, appraisals, etc. As first time home buyers who were new to the process, things initially felt overwhelming and we had no idea where to start. Then we met Summer at an open house, and she helped walk us through the process. Summer worked with us to find our perfect home that checked off ALL of our boxes (neighborhood, features, etc.) AND we didn't have to compromise on the inspection, even though so many people are waiving those just to purchase a home in this competitive market.
